One Slight Alteration

One complaint that I have received from a lot of the girls is about eating at night. I guess a lot of people have class until 8 and are really struggling to not skip dinner/no eating after 8:30. In lue of MANY requests, we made a slight alteration:

"Only fresh fruits/veggies (and of course your healthy liquids!) after 9"
(instead of "no eating after 8:30")
Love you all!
Sarah

KEEP GOING LADIES YOU'RE DOING GREAT!

Friday, September 11, 2009

you can call me kristin.

in general::
The youngest of six kids and proud aunt of eight, I am a bona-fide Provo-ite, and loved growing up here. BYU considers me a senior (and I will be for the next two or three years) but I’m a junior in the Illustration BFA program, working toward a Communications minor. My campus job is great – I’m THE graphic designer for Life Sciences. Part of this job includes photography, and now I also do freelance photography. Basically, I love all things art.

Other than the normal art-nerd activities (sketchbooking, painting, designing, photographing, etc), I absolutely love music. I play the guitar and sing, though I don’t do either nearly as often as I’d like. I love writing, especially on my blog (and I take pleasure in reading comments that others add...check it out! :D). I’m blessed to have a real love of education, and through various church callings, discovered the joy of teaching. I love learning for the sake of learning, and revel in reading. People-watching, People-meeting, and people-helping...are some of my favorite things, along with big puddles and crunchy leaves.

exercise (and all that jazz)::
I love working out in most capacities, but I’m [thankfully] returning from a year-long hiatus of running, due to Achilles tendinitis in both ankles. I dearly love to dance as well, although I don’t know if I would consider myself to be a typical “dancer”. I also love doing Pilates, although I haven't done it for a long time.

weakness(es)::
Weakness #1: sugar...especially brownies (I think I'm salivating thinking about them). I have a tendancy to think that dessert should accompany every meal. However, I actually went off of sugar a few months ago, so I don't know if that will be the biggest weakness now that school's started. Weakness #2: It's hard for me to eat before 8:30 some nights, because sometimes I have late classes (last year I had a class form 7-11pm); other times I have to pull all-nighters getting projects done...and I have a grumbly tummy at 3 in the morning.

why i'm here::

During the school year, I don't often get a chance to work out and eating just doesn't happen unless I pencil it on my 3x5 card 'to-do' list. I figure this will be a good way for me to stay (or at least think about staying) healthy and planning ahead. I don't know how much of it I'll be successful in, but I figure that I'll try. Why not?

An Introduction

Hello Everyone!

My name is Britain Young. Yes... it's pronounced just like the country. :D

A little bit of info about myself: I'm from Boston, MA and am a Vocal Performance major at BYU. I happen to be a junior in the program and a super-senior in everything else, but I love school so much that I wouldn't trade these days for anything. Last winter I spent four months in Europe studying opera on a BYU Study Abroad in Vienna, Austria. Contrary to popular belief, there are no kangaroos there (they even have t-shirts about it). :D Music is my passion and joy in life, but I love anything to do with culture and the arts. I'm a particular fan of anything by Mr. William "The Bard" Shakespeare. My dream job is to one day live in Europe and sing on a professional opera stage. I love writing... especially missionary letters, even though I don't have much cause to write them these days since the people I was writing to are all home now. :D

I'm pretty excited to be doing this challenge, particularly because I happen to be taking several intense physical classes this semester: weight training, martial arts, and contemporary dance. As a singer it is important to stay physically fit and have lots of energy. My favorite exercise is dance, just because it's so free and fun. My biggest weakness would have to be European chocolate... oh Milka, how I love thee so!

This is going to be a good experience for all of us. Best of luck everyone!

Ready, ready, ready to run....

Helllo! My name is Jamie Robinson, and I hail from Craig Colorado. I graduated from BYU a year ago in Geological Sciences, and now I'm rockin' it as a working geologic professional....woot, so grown up! I work for a company that develops geothermal powerplants.

Above pict includes some of my favorite things...I have my camera (I heart you little Nikon D60), I have the outdoors ( I heart you rocks/fresh air/amazing vistas), I have a goofy look on my face (I heart you laughing/good times).

I'm doing this competion to get back into shape...I ran a half marathon in March, and was in the best shape of my life...and then I slacked off this summer, and sat in my office for way too long. Now i'm NOT in the best shape of my life, and I totally miss feeling svelt :)

My secret weakness would include chocolate and being lazy. When I'm not eating chocolate and vegging I enjoy running and pilates to exersice!

Enthused and Possibly Dangerous

So, basically, me and my mad D.I. styles rock these mannequins all to trash.

I'm Rachel Cope, from Rose Park, Utah (hence, my rocking of said trash) and Bountiful, Utah (hence, my never having been shot for said trash-rocking.) I'm at the Y, studying Italian and History, with a smattering of ballroom dance. I occasionally tap dance. My favorite color is orange. I like to wreak havoc doing things like nailing Jell-O to trees and eating bacon-wrapped ice cream (hence, my participation in this competition.) I am afraid of live fish.

My favorite form of exercise is generally dance, but I also enjoy bike rides and friendly sword-fights of the epic variety. My biggest weakness is probably my own attitude; if I set a goal for myself, I defy my own authority. Peer pressure to the rescue!

Bring It On!

Sarah Theurer
Layton, UT

A little bit about me, let's see...I am a student at BYU, studying Art and Spanish Education. Laughing, playing with my friends, eating cereal late at night and swings might just be some of my most favorite things ever!
Why am I doing this competition? Well, my cousin organized one just like it and it seemed like so much fun! Also, I just got home from my mission in April and since coming back to BYU have put on what I think I lost on the mish. Not cool. I definately want to kick the eating late at night habit and get back into my running and working out habits! I hope that this will help me to do it, and I'm looking forward to the group motivation. Not to go all High School Musical on ya'll but, We're all in this together...
My biggest weaknesses are cereal late at night, sweets with friends (why do girls always have to have ice cream when we get together?), and being too lazy to run some days. For exercise I love running, walking (esp. at night), bike rides, cheezy workout videos with friends, and having a cute guy around to keep my heartrate up. (although that might not count for our competition.)
I put up this picture because, although it may not be the cutest of me, it's my motivation because I think I look out of shape and I don't want to turn into that Panda! I am so excited to do this with you foxy ladies! Let's rock these chunks and get some change!

Let the Games Begin!!!

Congratulations!!!

You’ve been invited to participate in the coolest health competition that Fall Semester has ever seen! Ok, so let me explain for those of you who weren’t anxiously awaiting this e-mail… My cousin did a health competition with her friends recently that was outrageously successful; everybody loved it, and had a blast. So, in talking to some of you about the challenge we thought, why not have a health competition as well?

The point of this challenge is just that, it’s a health challenge. It’s not to necessarily lose weight, or be better looking, it’s to be HEALTHIER! It’s a challenge to get us to do what we already know that we should be doing to treat our bodies better, have more energy, and just FEEL BETTER!
So, this is how it works… There’s a list of 9 “good habits” (see below) that we want to incorporate into our “healthy lifestyle”. Each habit is worth 1 point (except for exercise, which is worth 2!). You earn points by each good habit you follow you successfully follow each day, with a total possible of 10 points for each day. So, if that day you:

1 point! -Drank 64 oz. of fluid (only 1 can of diet soda per day)
1 point! -Took a Multivitamin
1 point! -Eat a healthy/porportioned breakfast (So no skipping meals girls or you’ll lose points!)
1 point! -Eat a healthy/porportioned lunch
1 point! -Eat a healthy/porportioned dinner
1 point! -No eating after 8:30 pm
1 point! -No sugary sweets
1 point! -No unhealthy snacks
2 points! -Exercise 45 minutes a day

Then you earned 10 points that day!!!

I know what you’re thinking: THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE Sarah! I’ll crack! I’d rather get my hand run over by a lawn aerator than go 12 weeks without those temptations that I love!.....Ok…..calm down……BREATH….Now, for the good news.

SUNDAYS ARE FREE! Feel free to take a break on Sunday, eat what you want, that day is up to you!

So there’s 60 points a week possible. Some weeks you may come out with 50/58/43 points, others might score a perfect 60, but at the end of the week you’ll report your points to me and I’ll post them on our new blog that I’m making up to help the competition. Here’s one little twist though! Everyone is allowed 10 bonus points to use throughout the competition. (You can use these for wiggle room, while still getting a perfect score some weeks!) Any unused points will be added to their final score. If they are used, YOU MUST KEEP TRACK OF IT, and nobody else will know until the end...it keeps the winner of the competition a bit of a mystery!

The blog will be called http://chunks4change.blogspot.com/ and is for you to post recipes, ideas, encouragement, suggestions, etc. (I’ll add you all on to be able to add comments/pics and posts once we start). At the start, you can post a photo/intro of you on the blog. If you’d like to see a sampling of what a competition like this looks like, check out my cousin’s blog at: http://chunksforchange.blogspot.com/ for their competition that just ended. You can see how they planned it at http://www.oneshetwoshe.com/2009/06/how-to-start-health-competition-with.html.

This will last for 12 weeks (so, we’d like to begin August 31st and end November 2nd). We are going to start it with the first 30ish girls who sign up (tell your friends!!!!), everyone will put in $10, and at the end the winner gets $50 plus the rights to decide what we all do with the other $250: A big party? CafĂ© Rio night? The Zoo? Jump on it? Rent a Velcro Wall? Go to the Movies? We will all go and celebrate making it through the challenge.

Ok. So ask questions, let me know, tell people about it, and we will get it all set up by August 31st! So please let me know who’s all in by August 28th!!!

Thanks!
Sarah Theurer
